Medical Assistant Jobs
If you are looking for a job in the medical field, or if you are already working in the medical field and are looking for a new job, you should consider becoming a medical assistant. According to the U.S. Department of Labor the prospects for finding a medical assistant job are excellent.
All you really need is a high school diploma or a GED to get started. Most employers are looking for assistants with at least two years of experience, but there are some things you can do to overcome this road block. When you are writing your resume and interviewing, make sure to highlight the skills you do have, rather than focusing on your lack of experience or formal training.
Try volunteering to get your foot in the door. Let the medical staff see how willing you are to work on tough projects. Prove yourself to be hard working and competent when you are given tasks. Many employers are more willing to hire someone they have experience with, if it is good, even though they may not have as much training as another possible candidate.
When looking for a medical assistant job, you should look online or in the newspaper and see when there will be a medical job fair. When you go, make sure you have your resume and references thoroughly reviewed and prepared to give to prospective employers. Dress appropriately and present yourself as a friendly professional. You should be ready to have on-the-spot interviews, so brush up on your interview skills before going.
When you do get an interview set up, and it isn’t immediately, you should consider visiting with the Human Resources Director to find out exactly what they are looking for. This way you can prepare yourself to focus on those skills and they will see what a great candidate you would be for the job. Remember to focus on the skills and experience you have. Discuss experience you have with volunteering or community groups, and the computer processing skills you have. Also mention any training classes or seminars you may have in any area, from marketing to Biology in high school.
Some of the down sides to becoming a medical assistant include being physically fit, being able to work well under pressure, and exposure to body fluids and diseases. Becoming a medical assistant isn’t for everyone. For those who do choose it, it is an enriching and rewarding career.
